Mark Travis Burns

1948-2018

Mark Travis Burns was born in Fort Myer, Virginia, September 1, 1948 and died at Bethany House in Auburn, Alabama, July 6, 2018.

He was a graduate of Lambuth College, Jackson, Tennessee; received Master's and Ph.D. degrees in Political Science from Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana.

He was an Associate Professor, in Political Science, at Auburn University from 1975 - 2015, specializing in Health Administration and Organization Theory. He taught health administration, health policy, organization theory, and public administration.  Soon after arriving at AU, the department chair asked him to make something of a small Health Administration major with 12 students.  He accepted the challenge, and created and taught many of what became the program’s core courses including some involving on-line materials.  He developed and maintained the program’s first website.  He was Director of the Auburn University Health Administration Program for many years.  During those years, he helped the program achieve and maintain AUPHA (Association of University Programs in Health Administration) accreditation and helped found both its student organization and the Auburn University Health Administration Alumni Organization, which later created a scholarship in his name.

He was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Auburn, Alabama, and participated in the revision of its basic organizational documents numerous times and served many years as Secretary to the church's Administration Team.

He loved hiking, travel, and reading, especially science fiction, politics, and history and was endlessly fascinated with new computer technologies (having learned computer skills on the mainframe at IU), the Internet, and the space program.

His professional memberships included: Healthcare Information Management Systems Society, American Public Health Association, Association of University Programs in Health Administration Academy of Management, American Political Science Association (life member), and American Society for Public Administration (life member).

He supported several progressive policy and advocacy groups, including Alabama Council on Human Relations, Americans for Separation of Church and State, National Space Society, American Civil Liberties Union, and Southern Poverty Law Center.

He was preceded in death by his father, Col. S.E. Burns (ret.), mother, SueDell Burns and his Aunt Helen Burns.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Janet; four children - Elizabeth (Betty) Burns Ryberg (Carl), Alan Burns (Jeanette) all of Auburn, Alabama; Staff Sgt. Thomas Burns (ret.) (Tina), of Fort Bragg, North Carolina; Susan Beasley (Kevin) of Opelika; brother-in-law Kent Zickfield (Vicki) of Cape Girardeau, 14 grandchildren, two nephews and a niece.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mark Burns/Health Administration Alumni Association Scholarship or to Trinity Lutheran Church.
