RUTH CAROLYN (POE) McLEAN

1915-2018

Ruth went to be with the Lord peacefully while resting at home on Friday, August 3rd.

Ruth was born on April 19th, 1915 on a farm in Chambers County, Alabama as the middle child in a family of eleven (11) children. After graduating from LaFayette High School, she moved to West Point, Georgia to work in a textile mill in 1938. She met her future husband, John E. McLean (Ed), while in West Point, and they were married on November 7th, 1941. They moved back to Chambers County as her husband was transferred by A&P Food Stores, from West Point to Opelika. Ed was drafted into the Army in 1943, and Ruth stayed with her family during the years Ed was overseas in Europe. After his discharge at the end of the war, Ruth and Ed moved to Opelika in 1948 where Ed continued his work at A&P Food Stores.

Ruth spent the remaining years of her life as a mother and housewife, while active in her church. She was known for her culinary skills and many people were able to enjoy her delicious homemade coconut cakes and sugar cookies.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years. She is survived by her son, Kenneth Edward McLean of Opelika, and two grandsons John Corry McLean (Mandy) and Calvin McLean Tayes (Tracy) of Panama City, Florida.

A Graveside Service will be held at Garden Hills Cemetery on Thursday, August 9, 2018 at 10:00 AM with Reverend Larry Doster officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that donations be made to either Central Baptist Church, 1611 2nd Avenue, Opelika, AL 36801 or to the East Alabama Medical Center Foundation, 2000 Pepperell Parkway, Opelika, AL 36801.
