Jon Duane Hackett
Jon Duane Hackett passed away on August 23, 2013, at Bethany House in Auburn,
Jon was born in Detroit, Michigan on August 19, 1947. He was a graduate of Walled
Lake High School. After graduation, he attended Michigan Christian College (presently
Rochester College) and Freed-Hardeman College (presently Freed-Hardeman
University). While attending Michigan Christian College, Jon met Elaine G. Walker; they
married on December 16, 1968.
Jon was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam, as a combat medic. He was
a recipient of the Combat Medics Badge, Army Commendation Medal for Valor, and a
After returning home, he dedicated his life to ministry and leading souls to
Christ, as a church of Christ preacher. He served as a youth minister in both St. Petersburg, Florida and Birmingham, Alabama, before going into full-time pulpit ministry. Jon served as minister for churches in Opelika, Mobile, Demopolis and Troy, Alabama, and Anderson, Indiana. He preached and taught at numerous lectureships across the country. He also spent some time in Nairobi, Kenya, with his brother, Berkeley, and served as a fundraiser for the mission work there, which was near and dear to his heart. His love for preaching the gospel was rivaled
only by his love for his family and his love for encouraging, counseling, and
comforting others in need. No person was undeserving of his time; no soul was unimportant to his cause.
Jon was preceded in death by his parents, Berkeley North Hackett and Florence
(Compeau) Hackett; brother, Berkeley Hackett; and sister, Elaine Pruse. He is survived
by his loving and devoted wife, Elaine Hackett of Opelika; daughters, Melanie Hendrix
(Tony) of Atlanta and Lisa Salsman (Aaron) of Opelika; son, Jon Hackett (Rachel) of
Gulf Shores; and eight grandchildren: Tripp and Tate Hendrix of Atlanta, Emily and
Catherine Hackett of Gulf Shores, and Amber, Carson and Joseph Carpenter and Aiden
Salsman, all of Opelika.
Visitation will be from 10:00am until 12:00pm CST on Monday, August 26 at Tenth
Street Church of Christ in Opelika. Funeral services will be held the same day at
2:00pm, also at Tenth Street Church of Christ in Opelika. Interment will be at Valhalla
Cemetery in Huntsville on Tuesday, August 27 at 2:00pm CST.
