Obituary

Charles William Nevin, retired US Army Veteran and former Chief of Auburn University Public Safety Department, passed away peacefully on July 8, 2017 after a brief illness. Bill was born on November 26, 1936, in Moundville, Alabama to Charles Evie and Annie Beatrice Nevin. Mr. Nevin is predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Jo Ann Owens Nevin, his parents, brother Donald Nevin, sister Ann Nevin Payne, son Charles William "Billy" Nevin, and a grandson Jebidiah Walker Searcy. He is survived by his sons, David (Lynda) Nevin, Owen (Stephanie) Searcy, Charles (Traci) Nevin, daughter, Rhonda Nevin (Michael) Bickelhaupt, sister, Lynda Nevin Coleman, grandchildren Judd Kelly, Shanana Kelly Summerlin, Ashley Nevin (Brent) Patterson, Owen Searcy, Jr., Jessica Nevin, Joshua Searcy, Jericho Searcy, Savannah Searcy, Wesley Nevin, William Nevin, Charles Nevin, Jr., and Kynleigh Nevin, great-grandchildren Mialeigh Kelly, Sumer Kelly, Cole Huey, Olivia and Preston Patterson. Bill served his country for 23 years in the U.S. Army and was a Vietnam War Veteran. He not only served there but also in Korea, Germany and many military bases throughout the U.S. Bill joined the military at the age of 17 and spent his career with the US Army Military Police Corps. The majority of his Military Police career was in support of the School of the Infantry at Fort Benning. During his time in the Army he was awarded the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal with Five Clusters, Vietnamese Campaign Medal, Vietnamese Service Medal, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, and the National Defense Medal. Bill retired with 23 years of dedicated service to the US Army. Following retirement, he worked for several years in Auburn at Plainsman Chrysler-Plymouth-Dodge where he was the service manager. Bills desire was to continue his career in service to others and he joined the Auburn University Police Department in 1980 as a Patrol Officer. During his tenure with the AUPD he held positions as, Corporal, Sergeant, Lieutenant, and Captain in Charge of Operations. In August 1994 he was promoted to Chief of Police where he would serve the remainder of his career. Chief Nevin was a graduate of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, VA and was a Firearms Training Instructor. He was active in the law enforcement community and served with the highest form of integrity and honor. In June 2004, Chief Nevin retired after 24 years of service to his community. Bill was a member of AUMC and called Auburn home for forty years. He was blessed to have many family and friends who loved him dearly. His presence was one in which within a matter of minutes the people around him would have smiled, laughed, and felt as if they had known him forever. He made a mark on numerous lives that will never be erased. Visitation will be held at Frederick-Dean Funeral Home on Thursday, July 13, 2017 from 5:00 until 7:00 pm. A Law Enforcement Funeral will be held Friday, July 14, 2017 at Auburn United Methodist Church, 137 South Gay Street, at 2:00 pm. Military Graveside Services will be held at Town Creek Cemetery immediately following the funeral service. Visitation will be held at Frederick-Dean Funeral Home on Thursday, July 13, 2017 from 5:00 until 7:00 pm.
