Obituary

Otha Lamar Frith, Jr., 92, was born in Dothan, AL, on May 7, 1924, and passed away January 29, 2017 at his home in Auburn. He was the son of the late Johnnie Mae Walls Frith and Otha Lee Frith, Sr. He graduated from Cottonwood High School and attended Alabama Polytechnic Institute API (Auburn University). He was a WWII submarine veteran serving on the USS Puffer SS-268, with several successful missions. He was a Motor Machinist Mate and 2nd class Petty Officer who earned numerous medals for heroic action while serving in the Navy. On one occasion, he was washed overboard while working to convert a fuel ballast tank on the Puffer while under enemy attack. His heroic actions are featured in the book "The USS Puffer in WWII" by Indiana professor Craig McDonald. After leaving the Navy, he began a highly successful sales career with Prudential. He was also a Credit Manager with Sears and a Real Estate Specialist (GS-12) with the U.S. Housing and Urban Development before retiring in 1977. He enjoyed spending time traveling with his wife and treasured time with their children on the family farm. He was active in the Lion's Club and State Commander for Sub Veterans. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Deborah Ann Dickey; granddaughter, Kendra Marie DeWitt VanderHoff; brother, Ronald Lynwood Frith; and brother-in-law, Don Allen Nall. He is survived by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Dunn Frith; son, Gary Lamar Frith (Jacque); daughter, Patricia Elizabeth DeWitt (Robert Roy); son-in-law, Jerry Dickey; grandchildren, Shelby Frith, Marisa Frith King (Nathan), Brock Frith, Jeremy Wayne Dickey (Lindsey), Hillary Marie Dickey, and Matthew Lee DeWitt (Stephanie); great grandchildren, Declan King, Ashton Dickey, Davis Dickey, and Ethan VanderHoff; brother, James Dorman Frith (Donnie); and sister, Ima Jean Nall. A private family service will be held at Greenwood Cemetery in Montgomery, AL.
