Obituary

George Duncan Hastie McMillan of Auburn passed away after a short illness on August 2, 2013, twelve days before his 96th birthday. Mr. McMillan was born August 14, 1917, in Stockton, Alabama to Carolyn Cook McMillan. His father, Malcolm McMillan passed away two months prior to his birth. Mr. McMillan graduated from Auburn in 1942. He worked with the Auburn University Extension Service for over 30 years. After having served as County Agent in Butler and Houston Counties, Mr. McMillan and his family moved to Auburn in 1961, when he was named the Extension Services District Director for 16 North Alabama counties. Mr. McMillan was one of the organizers of Auburn Bank & Trust, the first new bank in Auburn-Opelika in 50 years. He served as Co-Chair of the Bank's Board of Directors the entire time it was known as Auburn Bank & Trust. Mr. McMillan served six years on the Auburn Water Board. He served a term on the Auburn Athletic Advisory Committee. At the ages of 86 and 87, he served for two years as President of the Opelika-Auburn Chapter of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. Additionally, he also served as a Deacon and Sunday School Teacher at The First Baptist Church of Auburn. In 2009, he was inducted into The Alabama 4-H Hall of Fame. In fact, working with 4-H youth was one of the highlights of Mr. McMillan's career. His whole life was dedicated to "making the best better." Repeatedly, those who came in contact with Mr. McMillan commented that they left feeling better about themselves and their circumstances. Since his retirement from Auburn University, Mr. McMillan spent his career developing real estate in and around Auburn, most notably the Indian Shores Subdivision on Lake Martin. Mr. McMillan was preceded in death by his mother and three brothers; Malcolm Cook McMillan, Robert Samuel McMillan, and William Archie McMillan. He is survived by his wife, the former Jean Autrey of Greenville, to whom he was so happily married for over 70 years. He is also survived by his three sons, George D.H. McMillan, Jr. McMillan (Ann), Malcolm Autrey McMillan (Donna), and William Archie McMillan (Linda), and six grandchildren: Malcolm Autrey McMillan Jr., George D.H. McMillan III, Ann Dial McMillan Sims, Shane Wesley McMillan, William Archie McMillan, and Matthew Ralph Jolly McMillan. He is also survived by six great grandchildren, and a niece, Suzanne McMillan Tyler. On Sunday August 4, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM, the family will receive visitors at the Frederick-Dean Funeral Home, 1801 Frederick Road, Opelika, AL 36801. On Monday, August 5th, at 2:00 PM, Mr. McMillan's funeral service will be held at The Auburn Church of Christ, 712 South College Street, Auburn, AL 36830. Dr. Tom Steed will be officiating the services. Interment will follow at Auburn Memorial Park Cemetery. The pallbearers will be Mr. McMillans grandsons and close family friend Jim Swiderski.
