Dr. Kent Vernon Klinner, Jr., passed away at home on March 4, 2016, at the age of 84. A private graveside service will be held at Garden Hills for the family and close friends with visitation following from 11:00-1:00 at Trinity United Methodist Church, 800 2nd Ave, Opelika, AL, on Monday, March 7. Kent is preceded in death by his parents Kent Vernon, Sr., and Nell Goodgame Klinner; one sister, Elverna Klinner Biles; two brothers-in-law, Bill Biles and John Parker; two nephews, Klinner Biles and Jeffrey Parker. Kent is survived by his wife of 59 years, Cordelia Parker Klinner; 5 children Ken Klinner of California, Johnny (Mary Ellen Ball) Klinner of Auburn, Cynthia (Tripp) Leonard of Opelika, Karl (Jenny Wetherington) Klinner of TN, and Leah Klinner of Opelika; 7 grandchildren, Amy (Gareth) Klinner Bridge of TN, Allyson Klinner of Washington, DC, Alex Klinner of Auburn, Ann Marie and Adrienne Leonard of Opelika, Jane Ann, Ella Kate, and Crawford Klinner of TN; one great grandson, Connett Bridge of TN; sister-in-law Wandra (Dale) Parker Wyatt; brothers-in-law Warren (Christine) Parker, Larry (Ann) Parker, David (Peggy) Parker; and many nieces and nephews. Kent was born on July 7, 1931, in Gadsden, AL. Following graduation from Clift High School (now Opelika High School) in 1949 he earned a veterinarian degree from Alabama Polytechnic Institute (currently Auburn University) in 1956. After marrying Cordelia Parker on September 22, 1956, he enjoyed a career as a veterinarian. After 3 years of providing healthcare to "biting patients" as he laughingly described his canine and feline friends, he decided to pursue a career in medicine. Upon graduating from the University of Alabama Medical School in 1965, Kent spent the next 42 years providing the finest medical care to most of Lee County in Opelika. His retirement in 2008 ended an era of time when doctors made house calls or patients showed up at the good docs house seeking care. Kents family fondly remembers many dinners being interrupted for him to suture a neighborhood child or treat a feverish patient. To this day his devoted patients comment how they miss the good "horse" doc and the excellent medical care he provided. Although his main love was providing medical care to humans, Kent continued to enjoy using his veterinary skills on the family pets as well as his cows. Many days and weekends were spent on his farm where he worked on tractors, raised livestock and grew crops. His gift to mend stretched from humans to machinery. Kent lived a life full of "fixing" anything and anyone who needed his help. A special thank you to Synergy HomeCare and Kents wonderful caregivers Justin, Carmela, Maria, and Dana.
