Obituary

Ann Armstrong Gregory Baxter, 81, died Tuesday at East Alabama Medical Center after a brief illness. A native of Auburn, Ann graduated from Auburn High School, where she developed many life-long friendships. After marrying her husband, James Woods Baxter, she settled in Montgomery, where she lived for many years. Ann had a career as a recruiter for the blood donation program of the Montgomery Area Chapter of the American Red Cross, where her friendly and gracious manner ensured her success. Ann and Jim also served as certified volunteers in the Red Cross disaster response program. She was an active and dedicated member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday school and participated in the Womens Circle. Later, she was a member of Memorial Presbyterian Church. Upon retirement, she and Jim moved full-time to their house on the family farm near Stonewall, which allowed her to rekindle friendships with those she grew up with in Auburn. She joined the Joel McDavid Sunday School class at Auburn United Methodist Church, became an active member of the Harvesters Club, and still maintained her membership in the Westminster Presbyterian Circle. But her greatest joy in life was her children, their friends, and, later, her grandchildren. Known to her nieces and nephews as "Baby Ann" and her grandchildren as "Gang-Gang," she had the gift of making everyone, of all ages and backgrounds, feel special. Her gentle sense of humor and comfortable conversation made her a treasured companion, friend, and second mother to everyone who came within the warm circle of her welcome. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Woods Baxter; her daughter Martha Kirk "Molly" Baxter Hanson; her parents, William Henry Gregory, Jr., and Mary Kirk Armstrong Gregory; her brother, William Henry Gregory, III; her sisters-in-law Burmah Baxter LaBudde, Miriam Baxter Green, Frances Annette Baxter, Mary Ellene Baxter, Joan Baxter McKinnon, and Kitty Sue Beard Gregory; and her nephew, John Woods Weston. She is survived by her daughters, Laura Elizabeth Baxter Boyle and Anna Woods Baxter (Bobby) Champagne; her son-in-law, Kevin Hanson; her grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth Boyle (Will) Cisa, William Frederick Boyle, Henry Harris Boyle, Martha Kirk Hanson, Anna Armstrong Hanson (Ben Lotstein), Karl James Hanson, Charles Baxter Champagne, William Woods Champagne, Joseph Kirk Champagne, and Ann Malone Champagne; her sister, Mary Elizabeth Gregory (Jerry) Shaw; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cherished friends. Graveside services are planned for Friday, November 23, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Auburn Memorial Park, and the Reverend William McElveen will officiate. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Red Cross 5015 Woods Crossing Dr, Montgomery, AL 36106 and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.
