Doctor Calvin "Cal" Reber loving husband and father peacefully went to be with his Heavenly Father on August 26, 2013 at home, surrounded by his family. He was born in Long Beach California on April 20, 1926 and raised in Alberta Canada. He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force in England during WWII. In 1950 he earned a BSc degree in Pharmacy from the University of Alberta as a member of the Gold Key Society and in 1960 received an MD degree from the University of Utah. For many years he owned an active private practice, working as a family practitioner in rural Orofino, Idaho. Later in his career he focused on student health and sports medicine at Idaho State University. It was during this phase of his career that he was invited to participate in the sports medicine program at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. From there he was invited to be a team physician for the 1980 "Miracle on Ice" Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. In 1979 he joined the staff at the Tuskegee VA hospital in Opelika, Alabama and became Chief of Staff for Ambulatory Care. Dr. Reber loved listening to his wife play the organ and piano and he reveled in bragging about the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. He loved music of all kinds and in Auburn he sang with the Oliver Goldsmith Village Singers and the Civic Chorale. He was an avid reader, a sports enthusiast, a world traveler and he was active in his church. His love of travel took him through the US, Europe and the Middle East. Each of his children have very fold memories of "road trips" with their dad; destinations varied from the Canadian Rockies to the deserts of Turkey. Dr. Reber is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jolene, and five children: Beverley Reber and Terilyn (Paul Vaught) Reber of Cincinnati, Ohio; Bernard Reber of Auburn, Alabama; David (Lillie) Reber of Notasulga, Alabama; and Vernay (Rick Wesson) Reber of Richmond, California. One daughter, Kathleen (David) Crockett preceded him in death. Of his eight siblings, three sisters survive him: Joy (Ray) Sierpena, Margaret Reber and Sandra (Michael) Lloyd. He was preceded in death by brothers Gordon, Guy and Harold and sisters Darlene and Geraldine. Dr. Reber has four grandchildren, David (Carolyn) Crockett, Jill Crockett, Jason Oud and Dustie Reber, as well as five great-granchildren. Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, August 29, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Opelika, 510 Groce Street, with President Steve Brown officiating. Interment will follow in Auburn Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Frederick-Dean Funeral Home on Wednesday, August 28, 2013 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Frederick-Dean Funeral Home and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Opelika.
