Catherine Mangan Pendergast of Opelika, Alabama, born in Bronx, New York March 11, 1935 to the late John and Delia Mangan of Bronx, New York passed away at Arbor Springs Health and Rehabilitation Center on March 3, 2019.
Mrs. Pendergast moved to Opelika from New York in 1970 and was a vital part of the community ever since, volunteering in many capacities at her parish of St. Marys Catholic Church, supporting her childrens activities in sports and the arts during their school years, and volunteering at the Lee County Humane Shelter and the Opelika Salvation Army. She retired from the Opelika City School system in 1997.
Mrs. Pendergast was preceded in death by her beloved husband of over 50 years Lt Col Patrick Pendergast, her brother John Mangan of Toms River, New York, and her sisters Mary Mitchell of Bronx, New York and Elizabeth Rodda of Carmel, New York.
She is survived by her brothers, William Mangan of Mt Clemens, Michigan and Lawrence Mangan of Toms River, New Jersey, her children Patrick and Jeannine Pendergast of Wetumpka, Alabama, Helen and Steve Upshaw of Marietta, Georgia, Joan Pendergast and Joan Rost of Princeton, West Virginia, and John Pendergast and Joo Forte of New York, New York, and her grandchildren Meaghan Caton, Stephen Upshaw, Meredith Pendergast, Christopher Upshaw, Natalya Pendergast-Hempel, and Alexandra Pendergast.
Visitation will take place from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 7, 2019 in the Parlor at Frederick-Dean Funeral Home.
A funeral mass will be celebrated by Father Bruce Krause at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, March 8, 2019 in the Chapel at Frederick-Dean Funeral Home, to be followed by a graveside service at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery, Fort Mitchell, Alabama, where Mrs. Pendergast will be interred alongside her husband.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lee County Humane Shelter or St. Marys Catholic Church.
Visitation will take place from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 7, 2019 in the Parlor at Frederick-Dean Funeral Home.
