Memorial services for Dr. Clinton Allan Baker, age 84, of Auburn will be held at Auburn United Methodist Church on Tuesday, October 2, 2012 at 12:30 with Dr. George Mathison and Rev. Charles Cummings officiating. Visitation will follow the service. Dr. Baker died at his home on Wednesday, September 26, 2012 after an illness of several months. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, the former Martha Ann Tarpley of Mount Lebanon, PA.; son David Clinton Baker (Esmeralda) of Irving, TX; daughter Suzanne Baker Wilson (Philip) of Birmingham, AL; grandchildren, Johnathan Andrew Baker (Crystal) and great grandchildren Ryan Baker and Reese Baker of Watauga, TX; granddaughter Maria Ann Baker of Irving, TX; and grandchildren Amanda Elizabeth Wilson and Garrett Lowell Wilson of Birmingham; step-grandchildren Jesus Eguia and Karen Eguia of Irving, TX. Clint Baker was born June 10, 1928 in Louisville, Kentucky to Dr. M. Clinton Baker and his wife the former Lottie Mae McClain. He was a 1946 graduate of Webb School in Bell Buckle, TN. He then served three years with the U.S. Air Force primarily stationed at Manston A.F.B. in England. Upon return to the States, Dr. Baker graduated from the University of Louisville in 1955 with a B.S. in Marketing. He received a Master of Business Administration in 1957 and a Doctor of Business Administration in 1961 from Indiana University. Following his graduation, Dr. Baker served for 11 years on the faculty of the University of South Carolina as marketing and transportation professor and then Director of the M.B.A. program. Dr. Baker was elected to membership in Omicron Delta Epsilon, honorary economics society, and honorary business groups, Delta Sigma Pi and Beta Gamma Sigma, where he served as president. As an active member of the American Marketing Association and the Southern Marketing Association, he was a member of both Advisory Boards. In 1971-72, he was chosen President of the Southern Marketing Association. In 1970 he was named Dean of the Indiana State University School of Business in Terre Haute, Indiana. He also elected to teach a marketing course as he greatly missed his former interaction with undergraduate students. In 1974 Dr. Baker was named head of the Department of Marketing and Transportation in the School of Business, Auburn University. This proved to be a satisfying combination of teaching and administrative duties. In 1988 he was recognized as the College of Business Outstanding Teacher of the Year. Upon his retirement in 1993 he was named as Professor Emeritus. Although teaching was his first love, Dr. Baker had a variety of interests. He was a devoted member of the Methodist Church serving on the Administrative Boards in each city where he lived and was especially active at Auburn United Methodist Church where he presided over the Church Board in 1982-83. He was a long-time member and past president of the Auburn Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a week-end golfer, followed avidly Kentucky basketball, the Atlanta Braves baseball and, of course the Auburn Tigers. He loved classical music, enjoyed singing in the choir and in his younger years was a fine violinist. He also was a leader of a Boy Scout troop, a qualified trainer for dog obedience classes (his Shetland Sheepdog won several best of shows in Carolina competitions) and in his retirement years was an avid reader. He especially enjoyed his years working at East Alabama Medical Center first as chairman of volunteers in the CVICU unit and then as a receptionist on the hospital front desk. He was named Outstanding Hospital Volunteer in 2003. The family respectfully declines the gift of flowers and suggests memorial contributions may be directed to the Auburn Public Library, the Auburn United Methodist Church Organ Fund and the East Alabama Medical Center Foundation.
