Dennis Roger Donovan Jr. (Roger) died at Bethany House in Auburn Alabama on December 18, 2013, surrounded by his wife and close family.
He was born in Montgomery, Al. January 19, 1948 to Inez Strickland Donovan (deceased) and Dennis Roger Donovan Sr. He graduated from Sidney Lanier High School (1966) and went into the United States Navy September 1967. He served two tours of Viet Nam before being honorably discharged in November 1970. After he left the service, he worked in radio in the Montgomery area and Tuscaloosa area for 18 years.
In 1995, he went back to school to pursue a Bachelors degree from the University of Alabama and graduated in December 1999. He went on to the University of West Alabama obtaining a Masters of Education Degree in December 2003, specializing in Special Education. He taught for ten years and loved his students dearly. He was semi-retired the last two years of his life and substitute taught in the Lee County School system and at Opelika Middle School. He brought such joy and enthusiasm to the classroom that will be greatly missed by his students.
Roger leaves behind his loving wife of 24 years Katy (Katherine Belser Donovan) and stepson Adam Lee McPheeters (Shea), grandson Aidan William McPheeters. Sister Linda Donovan Jones(Robert) niece Emily Jones and nephew Andrew Jones(Anna), Sister Sandra Donovan Miller (Robert) Niece Katherine Smith, Mother-in-law Mary L. Belser, Sister-in-law Elizabeth Belser Hurst (David), Nieces Mary Elizabeth Hurst Reed (Chris), Niece Leisa Rose Hurst, several loving uncles, aunts, cousins, and a host of friends.
A memorial service will be held at St. Dunstans Episcopal Church on January 11, 2014 at 11:00 am. The service will be presided over by the Rev. John Wells Warren. A private burial will be held at a later date.
