Dr. James Noel Wilmoth of Auburn was born in Newton, West Virginia, on October 7, 1933, and he passed away at his home on Saturday, July 24, 2021. He had successfully overcome cancer ten years earlier. He was 87 years old at his death. Jim had a PhD in Statistics from Wayne State University in Michigan and started teaching at Auburn University in 1970. He retired in 1995. He graduated from Marshall University in West Virginia with a Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry. After working as a chemist in the industry in the Ohio/West Virginia area, he became a high school science teacher. He moved to Michigan and taught both science and higher math courses. He moved again, this time with wife and children, to Missouri. Since 1970, Jim lived in Auburn and taught Statistics, working with faculty on their research projects. During a sabbatical at Hamburg University, instead of becoming a student, Jim immediately was asked to teach. He was invited back to Hamburg for a semester as Visiting Professor. His daughters went to school during these visits. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and remarried a widow with two small daughters. They adopted a third daughter in 1977. After his retirement Jim accepted an invitation from one of his former doctoral students to go to Rijadh, Saudi Arabia, in 1996 to work for the Saudi Royal Air Force for five years. Jim and Helga saw many wonderful parts of the globe. Jim and Helga's family now includes spouses of children, grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren who also miss their Grosspapa. Jim never forgot that he came from West Virginia and still thought of himself as a Hillbilly.
