Fred Wesley McCain, 95, was born in Lineville, Alabama on October 26, 1919 and passed away on March 18, 2015 in Peachtree City, Georgia.
Fred was a man of many passions. He loved his family, his country, and Auburn Football.
Freds grandfather and great-grandfather were among the earliest settlers of Clay County, Alabama. They migrated from Tennessee in the early 1830s. Fred grew up on his fathers farm working with his four brothers and two sisters. He went to school at Lineville and was quarterback on the Lineville High School football team.
He played one year on the Auburn University football, baseball, and basketball teams before enlisting in the Army Air Corps in 1941. He served as a ground crew chief in Europe and North Africa, rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant and was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service.
After the war he married Frances Dickey in 1946 and completed his degree in 1948 in Agriculture Science at Auburn University. He taught at Lineville High School while maintaining the family farm. He was a devoted member of the Lineville Methodist Church, serving in several leadership roles.
After retiring, Fred and Frances moved from Lineville to Auburn, Alabama. They both loved Auburn Athletics and attended practices and games of all Auburn sports. They attended Auburn Methodist Church where they were faithful members. He was a member of the Auburn (B.P.O.E.) Elks Club.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Frances D. McCain; brothers, Borton, Robert Lee, Frank, and Lewis; sisters; Mary Dell and Pauline.
Mr. McCain is survived by his daughter, Jane McCain Melton (Terry) and two grandchildren, Clay and Will.
Visitation will be held on Friday, March 20, 2015 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm in the parlor at Frederick-Dean Funeral Home.
A Graveside Service will be held at 9:30 AM at Auburn Memorial Park Cemetery, Auburn, Alabama, with Dr. George Mathison officiating.
