Obituary

George "Larry" Johnson of Auburn, Alabama went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus on February 15, 2023. He was born on June 19, 1947 to Virginia Waites Johnson and George Monroe Johnson of Camp Hill, Alabama.

He grew up there and attended Camp Hill High School.

Larry was one of the first to be drafted into the US Army during the Vietnam War era and was stationed in Germany. Upon his return, he married Peggy and in 1979 he moved his family to the Opelika/Auburn area. Larry was self-employed in the wood business but his career also included five years at Dyas Chevrolet, hauling lumber for H&W, and over 20 years with Klein Plumbing. Larry retired in 2013 but occasionally worked part-time at J. Roarke Plumbing.

In recent years, Larry attended Purpose Baptist Church in Opelika, where he served with the food pantry. He also enjoyed being a part of the "J" Dollar Ministry, collecting aluminum cans and saving dollars beginning with a J (for Jesus) serial number to raise financial support for missionaries. He also spent countless hours looking out for widows and other neighbors in need. One of his greatest joys was driving his 1932 Chevrolet, "Miss Ginny."

Larry is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Peggy Henderson Johnson; daughter, Marcie Clack (Van) of Dothan; and will forever be "Gandy" to three grandchildren, Blakelee Moody (Sam), Braylee Clack, and Seth Clack. He was a friend to many but especially to dear friend Jeff Roarke (Stephanie) and longtime friends, Preston and Deborah Brazell.

Larry was preceded in death by his son, Dwayne Johnson; his parents Monroe Johnson and Virginia Johnson Klein; and his sister, Sylvia Burton. He will be sorely missed but we are comforted knowing he trusted in Jesus for eternal salvation.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial gift can be made to Waverly Cemetery at PO Box 21 in Waverly, Alabama 36879.
