George was born in St. Louis, Missouri on July 21, 1937 to George William Soules and Harriett Preston. He died peacefully on December 24, 2013 in Opelika, Alabama. George is survived by his loving wife of 23 years, Suzanne Steward Soules. He is also survived by his sister Lana Soules Catlin; three children Thomas Bradley Soules (Janet), Jerrold William Soules (Linda Colwell) and Shelley Soules Moore (Robert); two stepchildren Elizabeth Wyatt Killian (Richard) and John B.F. Wyatt III; and eight grandchildren whom he loved dearly. He cherished laughter with family and friends over good food, fine wine, witty humor and some competitive gaming, often challenging his colleagues to chess or his own variant called "capped pawn." He also enjoyed baseball, bridge, backgammon and volunteering for various community organizations including United Way, Babe Ruth Baseball and the YMCA. He graduated from Van Nuys High School in 1955 and received his Bachelors degree from UCLA in 1959. He attended Yale and UC Berkley from where he earned his M.A. In 1966, he received his Ph.D. in Mathematics from University of California at Santa Barbara. George was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. George began his career at Northrop Corporation in California from 1959-1966. In 1967, he moved to New Jersey to join The Institute for Defense Analyses, Center for Communications Research in Princeton as a research mathematician. He also served as Deputy Director for nine years. Over the years, he occasionally taught classes at Princeton University and Rutgers University. In 2000, he transferred to the Center for Communications Research in La Jolla, CA from where he retired in 2010. He received recognition for outstanding and meritorious service for his work. He was also a member of several national organizations: Mathematical Association of America, American Mathematical Society, American Contract Bridge League and United States Chess Federation. Memorial donations may be made to the Food Bank of East Alabama or United Way. Memorial services will be held at Frederick-Dean Funeral Home located at 1801 Frederick Road in Opelika, AL on Saturday, January 4, 2014 at 2 p.m. There will also be a memorial service in Princeton, NJ on Saturday, January 11, 2014.
