Obituary

Dr. Harold Oliver Beals, age 82, was born on July 4, 1931 in Mishawaka, Indiana and died on June 10, 2014 at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika, Alabama. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Opelika. He is predeceased by his parents, Colonzo Chelice and Glendora Scudder Beals; twin brother, Dr. Garold Scudder Beals; sister, Janet Beals Norlin; and brother, Robert C. Beals. Dr. Beals was educated in Edwardsburg, Michigan, Owyhee, Nevada and Mulberry, Indiana. He attended Purdue University and received a B.S.F. degree in 1955, an M.S. degree in 1957, and the Ph.D. degree in 1960 from Purdue. He was a member Sigma Xi, Xi Sigma Pi and others. He taught Forest Products courses and did research at Auburn University from 1960 until his retirement in 1993. Dr. Beals was an original founder of Evans Drum Heads with his brother, Robert C. Beals, Lawrence Drehmer and M.L. Evans. He served as a consultant in musical instrument manufacturing and the forest products industry. He also served as an expert witness in legal matters. He is listed in American Men of Science and other biographies. Dr. Beals is survived by his wife, Mildred; step-son, Walter LaClede Beals from a previous marriage; two nieces, Janalee Skinner and Barbara Roberts; three grandchildren, Tonya, Alyssa and Russell; as well as Beals, Mendenhall, and Scudder cousins. The family would like to express their special thanks to caregivers Sandra Gates and Latoya Russell who have been so helpful to the family.
