Obituary

Henry Lewis Smith June 9, 1932 – February 5, 2021 Pastor Henry Lewis Smith, "Doodaddy", passed into the presence of our Lord Jesus on February 5, 2021, after a brief illness. He was a broken sinner saved by grace through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Because Jesus died for him, he is now face to face with his Savior and Lord and reunited with his beloved wife of nearly 50 years. Smith was born in Chinquapin, North Carolina, in 1932. He came to know Christ at an early age. He attended Sylvester High School and Presbyterian College, then earned his Master of Divinity degree from Columbia Theological Seminary. He was called to his life's work of full-time gospel ministry and was ordained in the Presbyterian Church in 1956. His first pastorate was at Monroeville Presbyterian Church in Monroeville, Alabama. From there, he was called to Rock Hill, SC, to serve at First Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. Through his ministry to youth in Rock Hill, he befriended a teenager named Jimmy Lynn. Jimmy's older sister, Anna Beth, had recently finished college and was living at home. Henry and Anna Beth met and had a short courtship, which included a first date to a Barry Goldwater campaign rally; they married in 1964. He was deeply devoted to Jesus Christ and His word, and also to the Presbyterian Church, serving in the Presbyterian Church of America (PCA) since its inception in 1973. His ministry spanned 68 years at Presbyterian churches throughout the southeast: he shepherded congregations in Dahlonega, GA, Rock Hill, SC, Winter Haven, FL, and Monroeville, Prattville, Union Springs, Oak Hill, and Camden, AL. He was a "pastor of pastors", his ministry accentuated by his mentoring of younger pastors. Henry Lewis preached his last sermon just three months ago at the meeting of the Southeast Alabama Presbytery, an association of PCA elders which he served as Stated Clerk for 35 years. He was a man who delighted in his wife, his four children, and his twelve grandchildren, who lovingly called him "Doodaddy". Many who knew him later in life will fondly remembered how he tenderly cared for his beloved wife Anna Beth, who suffered from Alzheimer's disease for many years before she went home to be with the Lord in 2014. He spent the last six years of his life with an active ministry that included praying daily for each of his four children and twelve grandchildren by name, sharing the gospel with those he met at the gym or the grocery store, and spending countless hours on the phone encouraging friends and counselling younger pastors. A few other things that he delighted in: boiled peanuts (his recipe is famous!), grandkids swimming in his pool, reading history books of all kinds, summer vacations with his family in Montreat, NC, the Westminster Shorter Catechism, his Scottish heritage, and weekend suppers with his son Hank at Cracker Barrell. He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Beth Lynn Smith, his parents Rev. William and Carrie (Lewis) Smith, and his brother William Clifford Smith. He is survived by his sister Lena Smith Knight; his four children, Henry Lewis Smith, Jr. and Sara Lynn Smith T (Dozier) of Opelika, Timothy Jefferies Smith (Rhonda) and Lisbeth Smith Chapman (Ben) of Birmingham; his twelve grandchildren, Winston, Henry, Sara Hollis, Dozier, Vera Elizabeth, and Joanne Smith T; Wheeler, Hollis, and Wrenn Smith; and Anna Beth, Chap, and Nancy Chapman; and countless other sons and daughters in the faith. This high encomium was passed on him by a long-time brother in the faith: "He was a faithful soldier of the cross in sharing the gospel, crossing racial barriers, and making disciples." Services will be held in Opelika, Alabama, on Tuesday, February 9. A graveside service, open to all, will be at 11:00 am at Garden Hills Cemetery. An in-person, socially-distanced memorial service will be held at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Opelika at 1:30 pm. (Reservations are required for the church service. Call the church at 334-745-4889 if you would like to attend.) The family will receive visitors outdoors at the church at 2:30 pm. Reservations are not necessary for the graveside service or the 2:30 outdoor visitation. The service may be viewed via livestream at https://tpcopelika.org/live/ at 1:30 pm CST. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Southeast Alabama Presbytery, 300 Opelika Rd #3133, Auburn, AL 36830, to a fund that will provide a small monetary reward to those who recite the Westminster Shorter Catechism.
