Hilda Harlan Harris Mitchell, age 105, the widow of John Irvin Mitchell, died peacefully on June 18, 2012 at Oak Park, a division of East Alabama Medical Center, Auburn, Alabama. She was born in 1906 in New Decatur, Alabama, the younger daughter of Albert French Harris and Caroline Hannah Gillespie Harris. Her elder sister was Wanda Harris of Decatur; older brothers, Everett Harrris, M.D. and Kenneth Harris. She attended Maryville College, graduated from State Teachers College (UNA), and was awarded a Carnegie Foundation scholarship toward a Master's degree in Art Education at Vanderbilt-Peabody College, Nashville. Hilda taught at Florence State, later University of North Alabama from 1954 until 1975 in the Department of Art. She was a gifted artist in calligraphy, watercolor and design. She also served as mentor to many students who later would teach throughout the public school systems of Alabama. Among the large number of leadership positions she held at Trinity Episcopal Church, Florence: Memorials Committee, Women's Auxiliary, Altar Guild, Choir, Canterbury Club and counselor at Camp McDowell. Her most notable achievements were in the creative aspect. Hilda was the design artist for embroidered fair linens, needlepoint kneeler pads, pen-sketched Trinity Parish note cards, church programs, and pewter ware. She was a principal creator of the small chapel in the Parish Hall. Her most notable designs may be the multiple stained glass windows installed in Mullen Hall. In the 1980's, she created the three gothic windows above the podium and at age ninety-six in 2002, Hilda completed her concept of stained glass windows in the hall, with a stunning array on either side of the nave depicting symbols of liturgical saints. In 1941, she became a member of the Florence Study Club, was a founding member of the Tennessee Valley Art Association and joined the National Society of Colonial Dames. In civic activities she participated in the Girl Scouts as leader and camp counselor and advisor to the Kennedy-Douglas Center for the Arts. She is survived by two daughters, Wanda Mitchell Marsh, her husband Malcolm L. "Buck" Marsh, of Auburn, and Dr. Elizabeth Mitchell Walter, of The Villages, Florida; grandchildren, Nancy Marsh Day (Jack), Susan Mitchell Marsh, Malcolm L. Marsh III (Melissa), Margaret Walter Wilson (Ravinell), Andrew William Francis Walter (Traci); great grandchildren, James P. Turner III (Olivia), Susan Dean Turner Dubois (Justin), Caroline Lewis Cochran (Christopher), Bailey Lewis (Blayne), John Covey Lewis, Mary Nevaire Marsh, Hayden Lawler Marsh, Alexander Jonathan Cain, Tyler Andrew Walter, Hannah Jocelyn Walter; great-great grandchildren, Raley Marsh Cochran, Malcolm Miles Dubois, Andrew Thomas Turner; nieces and nephews, Elizabeth Anne Guthrie (Hugh), Elizabeth Sloan Smith (Clyde), Amy Sloan Hancock (Bobby), James H. Sloan, Jr., Clyde P. Jackson (Sara), Patricia M. Rossman (Paul), Mary Ann M. Buss (Dan), John Mitchell Makal (Marie), and Emily M. Waitzman (Charlie); and numerous other nieces and nephews and blended family members. A memorial service will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church, Florence, Alabama, Sunday, June 24, 2012, at 2:00 p.m., the Rev. Callie Plunkett-Brewton officiating. A private committal service will be held at the family plot.
