Obituary

James Fredrick McEntire, Sr., 93, passed away on October 27 2014. He was the son of the late Joseph B. and Laura Weaver McEntire and the youngest of five brothers and sisters. A native of Sumach Community of Murray County, Georgia, he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps in 1942 and served as a corporal during WWII. He honorably served his country until 1946. While in the military he married his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Jane, on August 15, 1945. They were truly blessed during their marriage and their lives together until her passing in 2011. Upon discharge from the military, he was the first member of his family to enroll in college. He graduated from the University of Georgia and was a member of the Alpha Zeta honorary agricultural fraternity. He began his lengthy career with the U. S. Department of Agriculture in 1957 and remained there until his retirement in 1983. While living in Athens, he worked devotedly as a troop leader with the Boy Scouts and as a member of his church. He was a former president of the Athens Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution and a member of the Sons of the Confederate Veterans. He is a member of Faith Presbyterian Church and a former member of Young Harris Memorial United Methodist Church and Chapelwood United Methodist. He enjoyed reading, gardening, and genealogical research. He will always be remembered by family and friends as the epitome of the old-school southern gentlemen; who was a quiet man of unfailing courtesy and graciousness, good humor, and absolute, uncompromising integrity. His greatest legacy will be his love of and service to God, his family, and his country. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Jennie Mae (Jane) Smith McEntire, and his loving daughter, Janet Ann McEntire Swanson. He is survived by his sons, James F. McEntire, Jr. (Sherry) and Thomas C. McEntire (Missy); seven grandchildren, Nathan Swanson (Renee), Jeff McEntire (Marisa), Ben Swanson (Rachel), Rebecca McEntire, John Swanson (Corey), Beth McEntire Kalombo (Gilbert), and Bryan McEntire; and numerous great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the American Alzheimers Association or the American Cancer Society. A memorial service will be held at Faith Presbyterian Church in Watkinsville, Georgia on Thursday, October 30, 2014 10:00 a.m./EST. Burial will be in Chatsworth, Georgia at the Sumach Cumberland Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, October 29, 2014 at 2:00 p.m./EST.
