Dr. James Burton McSwain

Dr. James Burton McSwain of Auburn, Alabama, son of the late John and Hazel (Long) McSwain of Memphis, Tennessee passed away peacefully Thursday, June 5, 2025 at Grandview Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama. He was 76 years old.

Dr. McSwain retired from Tuskegee University in 2018 where he taught history. His hobbies included reading, writing, research, trains, and trying new foods. He was also a member of Lakeview Baptist Church in Auburn, Alabama and was very close to his pastor, Rev. Cliff Knight

Dr. McSwain leaves two sisters, Sandra Strickland of Corinth, Mississippi and Cindy Rector of New Castle, Indiana; nieces, Michelle Burcham of Mississippi, Melia Strickland of Mississippi, Melissa Strickland of Mississippi, the late Melinda Clark of Mississippi, Robin Rector of New Castle, Indiana; nephew, Ben Rector of New Castle, Indiana; brother-in-law, James Rector. He also leaves several very special friends.

Visitation will be Tuesday, June 10, 2025 in the Parlor at Frederick-Dean Funeral Home from 12:00PM - 12:50PM. The Funeral Service will be at 1:00PM in the Chapel with Reverend Cliff Knight officiating. Interment will follow at Garden Hill Cemetery.
