Jean Autrey McMillan, 91, died on August 24, 2014. She was born in Greenville, AL on January 20, 1923 to George Nick Autrey and Eula Barganier Autrey. She was the fifth child of eleven children. She attended the University of Montevallo where she was a student until she married George D. H. McMillan on December 26, 1942.
Mrs. McMillan was very supportive of her husbands career with the Auburn University Cooperative Extension Service. They lived in Greenville for 12 years where, within a span of 31 months, they had three sons. Following Greenville, they lived in Dothan, AL for five years, and moved to Auburn in 1961 where she was a resident for the remainder of her life. She was a dedicated and faithful member of the Auburn Church of Christ. Her church family was most meaningful to her and she supported the churchs activities and members in so many ways.
Mrs. McMillan was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and a homemaker in the truest sense of the word. However, she also taught part-time in the public school systems and she was an active member and leader of civic, educational, and cultural organizations in each of the communities she lived. She was well known and loved for her gentle ways and congeniality. Even as her health deteriorated, she maintained her inspiring and gentle disposition.
She was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 70 years. She was also preceded in death by her son, William A. McMillan, and nine of her 10 siblings.
Mrs. McMillan is survived by son George D. H. McMillan, Jr. (Ann), son M. Autrey McMillan (Donna), and daughter-in-law Linda Silavent McMillan; sister Eleanor Faye McDonough (Gilbert); grandchildren Autrey McMillan, Jr. (Wendy), George D. H. McMillan, III (Meredith), Ann Dial McMillan Sims (Will), Shane W. McMillan (Sara), William A. McMillan, Jr. (Haley), and Matthew Ralph Jolly McMillan; six great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews of whom she was very fond.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Mrs. McMillans memory to The Auburn Christian Foundation, 439 South College Street, Auburn, Alabama 36830.
