Obituary

Jeanne Winters, beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend passed away peacefully on March 20, 2018, at age 95, with her daughters at her side. Jeanne was born in Alliance, Ohio. At age 9, she was chosen to be in the first gifted program in the U.S., at Cleveland, Ohio. In high school, she enjoyed playing the oboe in the band. When she was older, she sang in church choir throughout most of the moves required of an Air Force wife. She was 19 when she married Bob Bailey, who went off to fight in WWII. Jeanne lead a full life pursuing her interests of art, music, cats, French language and travel. She was a voracious reader with an impressive intellect. Another of her passions was the Girl Scouts of America. As an adult, she rose being nominated as the U.S. Goodwill Ambassador to the Girl Guides in the U.K., for three months. Before that, she was a summer business manager in several Girl Scout camps around the country, always with daughters in tow. When her husband retired, they moved to Auburn for his new job of professor at Auburn University (1965). She was soon working as a secretary in the Agriculture Department there until she retired. After her divorce, she stayed on in Auburn, continued to work but expanded her involvement in community activities, volunteering for The Literacy Program and the Rape Hotline. Jeanne found "a home" in Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, becoming the bookkeeper and volunteer in many church activities, including playing handbells and singing in the choir. She met her second husband, David Winters, a widower and church member there. David and Jeanne clicked and they married, moving David and his two children, Margaret and Everett, into Jeannes house. The couple was very happy until the night before Jeannes surgery, when David died playing tennis. She lived her final years at Monarch Estates, where she made many friends. Jeanne is survived by daughters Linda Espy ( husband Gene), Margaret Nicolosi (husband Joe), Marsha Andersen, (husband Dick), and son Everett Winters (wife Nancy) and brother Robert Wintersteen. Grandchildren are Ashley Kehoe (husband Tom Kehoe), Shane DeBeer (fianc Gwendolyn Modder), Matt DeBeer (wife Kacey) and Jason Espy (wife Brooklyn Espy.) Great-grandchildren are: Blythe DeBeer, Colette DeBeer, Conrad DeBeer, Aoife Kehoe, Niamh Kehoe, Persia Modder and Ludo Modder. Memorial service will be held at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 100 Church Drive, Auburn, Alabama on May 5 at 2:00 p.m., followed by a reception in the Parish Hall following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations to Holy Trinity would be welcome.
