Judge Joe Sherrill Bailey, of Auburn, died Saturday evening, April 5, 2014 at UAB Hospital after a long battle with cancer and other health complications. Judge Bailey was born in Auburn on December 28, 1946 and lived there most of his life. He graduated from Auburn University in 1969 and the University of Virginia School of Law in 1979. Judge Bailey practiced law and served as the Municipal Court Judge in Auburn for 30 years. Many of his long-time companions were colleagues in the legal profession, and others he forged relationships with around the fire at hunting camp.
Judge Bailey was preceded in death by his father, Wilford Sherrill Bailey and mother, Cratus Hester Bailey. Much like his parents, Judge Bailey had a servants heart. His acts of kindness and sense of humor will be dearly missed by family and friends.
Judge Bailey is survived by his wife, Wanda Lee Bailey; sons, David (Lori) and Brooks, both of Auburn; grandsons, Thomas, Ellis and Andrew; brother, Ed (Cheryl) of Rye, New York; sister, Margaret (Will) Newcomb of Palmyra, Virginia; sister, Sarah Bailey of Acworth, Georgia; aunt, Edith (Jim) Frazier of Powhatan, Virginia; as well as many cousins, nephews and nieces.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday April 9, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at the Auburn Church of Christ. Dr. Tom Steed will officiate, and the family will receive visitors following the service in the fellowship hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Auburn Church of Christ Building Fund, 712 South College Street, Auburn, Alabama 36830.
