John Hayhurst Hand

1940-2022

John Hayhurst Hand was born in Columbus, Ohio on May 6, 1940 to the late George Henry

Hand and Madeline Gladys Randolph Hand and passed away on October 15, 2022. He was 82

years old.

He graduated from Southern Illinois University High School, Carbondale, Illinois. His

undergraduate work was at Swarthmore College in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania and he received

his doctorate in Economics from M. I. T. in Cambridge, Massachusetts. John taught at the

University of Missouri-St. Louis, married Roberta MacLaggan in 1970 and they moved to Ohio

University in Athens, Ohio before coming to Auburn University in 1974, where he taught

Finance. Upon retiring in 1997, John continued reading, traveling, and being a big Tiger football

and basketball fan. For years he was a volunteer in the genealogy library of the Family History

Center and a volunteer tax preparer for AARP.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Randolph Hand.

John leaves his wife of 52 years, Roberta Hand, one son, Robert Hand (Jessi) of Lewiston, Ohio.

A graveside service is planned for Monday, October 24, 2022 at 1:30 PM at Auburn Memorial

Park Cemetery in Auburn.
