Joseph Henry Connally, 88, joined his Lord and Savior on Saturday, December 13, 2014 in Franklin, Tennessee. Born in Pine Park, GA on April 17, 1926, Joe was the youngest of four children. He was joyfully married for 49 years to his beloved sunshine, Barbara Sue "Susie" Connally. Joe served as a decorated aerial gunner in World War II with the Army Air Corps in the Pacific Theater. He rose to the rank of sergeant before honorable discharge in 1946. He attended the University of Georgia, where he played football and graduated in 1949 with a degree in Business. Joe had an extensive football coaching career, starting at Decatur High School, where he won a Georgia state championship in 1950. He coached defensive line for 26 years at Auburn University, 25 years of which were under the legendary football coach Ralph "Shug" Jordan and included a National Championship in 1957. He served as Auburns head baseball coach in 1958, winning an SEC championship. Following his retirement from Auburn University in 1987, he and his wife enjoyed traveling, gardening, long walks and visits with their children and grandchildren.
Joe is preceded in death by his parents, Julian Connally and Irma Irene Connally Clay, wife, Susie Connally and sisters, Edna Cook and Frances Cook. He is survived by his sister, Grace Connally (Huntsville, AL); daughter Carla Connally (Nashville, TN), son Craig Connally, daughter-in-law Patti, and two grandchildren, Kathryn and Ryan (Franklin, TN), niece Shirley Cook (Huntsville, AL) and nephews Bobby Cook (Ramer, AL) and Joe Cook (Chattanooga, TN).
