Kelda Ward, age 91, of Auburn, Alabama, passed away Saturday, March 17, 2018, at home. She was born in Kansas City, Missouri, October 17, 1926, the child of John and Helen Whipple.
Kelda found her way to Alabama upon meeting and marrying Auburn student Jim Ward from Geneva, Alabama, while he was in training as a Naval aviator in Olathe, Kansas, in 1945. Jim brought her back to Auburn after the war, where Kelda became Auburns first head majorette in 1947. After Auburn, she raised her family in Sylacauga, Alabama, before moving to Birmingham to multitask with an architectural firm for 20 years. Upon retirement, Kelda moved back to Auburn to be near her daughter Leigh. Kelda and Leigh built a house where they lived together for 20 years until her passing. Kelda was spirited, selfless, and enjoyed being with her family, especially gatherings in Auburn for football games.
Kelda is survived by her daughter Leigh Nix, her son Jimmy Ward (Rachel); three granddaughters: Megan Nissen (Robert), Rachel Robinson (Seth), and Rebecca Ward (Tony); four grandsons: Michael Nix (Candace), Russ Neese (Shannon), Zachary Ward, and James Ward; and ten great-grandchildren.
She was preceded by her husband Jim Ward, her youngest son Larry Ward (Deborah), and her sister Jean Orsmond.
