Obituary

With great love we say farewell to Martha Grace Griffin McIntyre, 104, who passed away peacefully on May 19, 2013. Her family praises her as a wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and friends remember her with fondness and recognize her generous spirit. Her life was increased in joy while being surrounded by family and friends. Auburn was home for Martha since moving here in 1948. Martha was born in Somerset, Kentucky, to the late Dr. Thomas Robin Griffin and the late Alvina Louise Stephan Griffin on November 2, 1908. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Sherwood C. McIntyre, Sr., Professor Emeritus of Auburn University. She is survived by their children, Martha Ann Lawson (Stan), of Raymond, MS; Thomas Robin McIntyre (Marietta), of Auburn, AL; and Sherwood C. McIntyre, Jr. (Marilyn), Edmond, OK. Grandchildren are Sonny Lawson (Jon), of Katy, TX; Michelle Bordner of Charlotte, NC; Cheri Frederick (Dave), of Pensacola, FL; Joseph S. McIntyre and David M. McIntyre of Auburn, AL; Catherine Stephens (Mark), of Frisco, TX; Patrick R. McIntyre (Sol) of Salem, AL; Dr. Matthew G. McIntyre (Amy) of Mobile, AL; and Dr. Ashley McIntyre (Chad) of Johnson City, TN. She is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren. The children and grandchildren have many special memories that remain in their hearts from times together, and are thankful for the gift of her life. Martha lived her faith and was a willing servant to St. Michael's Catholic Church having provided flowers from her garden to beautify the church and having personally laundered the altar linens for many years. She was an active member of the Women's Club of Auburn and an avid fan of Auburn University football. She earned a Bachelor's Degree of Education from the University of Kentucky, and a Master's of Education from The Ohio State University. Martha was a beloved first grade teacher at Beauregard School for a number of years and her students still remember her fondly and often ask family members about her.
