Mary Elizabeth Crawford, age 84, of Auburn, Alabama went home to meet her Lord and Savior after a short battle with cancer. She passed away at Bethany House on November 8, 2017.
Mary Elizabeth was born on May 27, 1933 in Leighton, Alabama. Before entering the doctoral program at Auburn University she taught 3rd grade in Guntersville, Alabama. She earned her Doctorate of Education in 1970 from Auburn University where she taught for 4 years. After leaving the University to raise her children she accepted a position as President of Junior Achievement in East Alabama/West Georgia where she served for 20 years and became known as "The Little General". In 1951 she married D.J. Browning, and together they had two children, Sidney Browning & Martha Browning Hughes. At the time of his passing in 2007 they had celebrated 56 years of marriage. In 2009 Mary Elizabeth married Slaton Crawford who fondly referred to her as "Babe". She was a life-long member of Auburn United Methodist Church and a faithful member of the Joel McDavid Sunday School Class.
Mary Elizabeth was preceded in death by her Mother, Mary Hugh McGee Patterson; Father, James Wilburn Patterson; and Husband, D.J. Browning.
She is survived by her husband, Slaton Crawford; Son, Sid Browning (wife Chris) and grandchildren Macy & Jarmon; Daughter, Martha Browning Hughes (Husband Mark) and grandchildren Michael & Marshall; Brother James Wilburn Patterson (Wife Barbara); Brother Gordon Davis Patterson (Wife Christa).
A Memorial Service will be held at Auburn United Methodist Church Founders Chapel on Friday, November 10, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. to celebrate her life. There will be a visitation immediately prior to the service. Interment will be a private graveside service.
Pallbearers will be: Jarmon Browning, Michael Hughes, Marshall Hughes, Mark Hughes, Andy Lamar, and Earl Clark. Honorary Pallbearers will be the men of the Joel McDavid Sunday School Class.
There will be a visitation immediately prior to the service.
