Mary Elizabeth Mayes Gilmer, 85, of Dadeville, Alabama died Saturday, August 22nd.
She was born to the late Emmett E. Mayes and Leila McClellan Mayes, December 20, 1929. Mary graduated from Anniston High School in 1936 and received a BA in Early Child Development from the University of Montevallo in 1940. She married the late Charles Edwin Gilmer in 1952, and they lived most of their years together in Auburn, Alabama before relocating to their summer home on Lake Martin in 1994.
Mary was Director and teacher at Grace United Methodist Church Nursery School for many years and in 1984 Mary and two close friends opened Auburns Small World Nursery School. Mary was Director of the school until they sold it in 1989. Mary was a member of the Lake Martin Baptist Church in Dadeville, Alabama. Mary and her late husband, Chuck, loved traveling across the United States in their RV, and especially enjoyed their two month stay in the Florida Keys each winter.
Mary is survived by five children and their spouses; Skip & Wanda Gilmer of Winston Salem, NC, David & Linda Gilmer of Alabaster, AL, Wayne & Janet Gilmer of Auburn, AL, Greg Gilmer of Winston Salem, NC, and Mark & Christine Gilmer of Austin, TX. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Paige, Greyson, Kaci and Kailee.
Marys favorite charity was St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital. A memorial fund has been set up under the name Gilmer, Mary Mayes if anyone wishes to donate in her honor.
A visitation will be held from 10:00 unitl11:15 a.m. Saturday, August 29, 2015 in the Parlor at Frederick-Dean Funeral Home.
Funeral service will be held Saturday, August 29, 2015 in the Chapel at Frederick-Dean Funeral Home at 11:30 a.m. with Pastor Mark Gainey officiating. Interment will follow at Auburn Memorial Park.
