Funeral Service for Phyliss Markle, age 87 of Auburn, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 29, 2014 at Grace United Methodist Church in Auburn, with Reverend Libba Stinson officiating. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 10:00 a.m. until the funeral hour. Interment will follow in Auburn Memorial Park Cemetery. Mrs. Markle died peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on Tuesday, November 25, 2014. Mrs. Markle was born on July 20, 1927 in Gadsden, Alabama to parents Edward N. and Lillian Lister. She moved to Auburn in 1958 and, while working full time and raising two sons, graduated night school and worked as bookkeeper for several businesses. She loved attending her beloved Auburn Tigers football games, while cooking and visiting with friends and relatives before and after games. Mrs. Markle was an active member of Grace Methodist Church and loved attending activities at the church. She was an active member of the Womans Club of Auburn, the Bridge Club, and the Pilot Club of Auburn. She loved working and worked at the Auburn University Fisheries Department until she retired at the age of 75. Survivors include her son, Tom Smith (Kaye Smith) of Auburn; sister, Jo Barnes of Seminole, Florida; and her grandchildren, Gabrielle Smith, Alexa Hall of Auburn, Adrian Smith of Anaheim, California, and Elizabeth Smith of Anchorage, Alaska. Mrs. Markle was preceded in death by husband, C. C. Markle; son, Jimmy Smith; sisters, Kathleen Countryman and Betty Rawls; and brothers, Frank, Tom and John Lister. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Grace United Methodist Building Fund. Frederick-Dean Funeral Home is directing.
