On April 2nd, our beloved Phyllis Moore McCain passed away in Auburn at age 67.
We who cherished the life of Phyllis Moore McCain
A devoted mother and wife, Phyllis McCain never met a stranger. Her kindness, generosity of spirit and unmistakable laugh were light to all who knew her.
Her desire to believe in people was a gift, always encouraging everyone to tap into their greatest potential. Phyllis sense of humor, love for her family and strength of character will be dearly missed by those who knew, admired and loved her. She was a dear and wonderful friend to many.
Born Phyllis Else Moore in Chester, Pennsylvania in 1951, she spent most of her childhood in Mobile, Alabama. She attended Murphy High school, where she was a cheerleader for the Panthers, serving as head cheerleader her senior year. A graduate of Auburn University, Phyllis was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority and National Honor Society. Incredibly intelligent with a strong work ethic, she continued her education by earning a graduate degree from Auburn Universitys Harrison School of Pharmacy. After college, Phyllis moved to Opelika to work in pharmacy sales. Not long after, she opened Moore Drugs in Hurtsboro, a community she came to know, serve and love dearly for over thirty years.
Shortly after opening Moore Drugs, Phyllis moved into her longtime Auburn home with her daughter, best friend, and the light of her life, Pamela. Spending time with Pamela brought her the greatest joy, and their bond was unbreakable. She was also like a second-mother to many of her daughters friends, who still sit and talk for hours about the times "Mrs. Phyllis" would sit on the porch with them, lend an ear and of course, offer some no nonsense advice followed by the warmest hug imaginable. She was truly one of a kind.
When Pamela was in high school, Phyllis met the love of her life, Jack "Bucky" McCain. They were married in 1996, and in 2018 she was overjoyed to welcome son-in-law Chip Baker into the family when he married Pamela in a Key West, Florida ceremony.
More than anything, Phyllis cherished time with her family, creating some of her fondest memories around the kitchen island, making seafood dishes like muscles or shrimp scampi with Pamela, Bucky and their friends, telling stories and laughing as her beloved pups ran circles around her feet. She was also a devout woman of faith, actively involved in her church, Holy Trinity, whose causes in the community were close to her heart, a heart that was always full, and one that we will be forever grateful to have known.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, James Gilbert Moore and Phyllis Deemer Moore.
She is survived by her husband, Jack Lamar McCain; daughter, Pamela Grace Baker (Chip and their daughters Karlee and Madelyn); two sisters, Pamela Lynn Moore and Patty Moore Parnell (Stuart) of Mobile; niece and three nephews, Patricia Parnell Powell (Garrett), Stuart Alexander Parnell Jr. (Katelyn), James Leighton Parnell and Patrick Moore Parnell (Elizabeth) of Mobile.
