Robert M. "Bob" Jakeman, 90, died August 30, 2013, at Morningside of Auburn in Auburn, Alabama. He was born February 22, 1923, to Nannie Lee Parker and Raymond Price Jakeman, Sr., in Norfolk, Virginia, the youngest of four siblings. He was preceded in death by Flora Agnes Bandy Jakeman, his loving wife for more than 66 years. After graduating from Erwin High School in Erwin, North Carolina, Bob enlisted in the Army Air Forces in 1942. He was a radio operator during his time of service where he learned the art of sending and receiving International Morse Code, a skill he would continue to practice for many years as an amateur (ham) radio operator under call sign KD4AIS. While stationed in Nashville, Tennessee, Bob met his future wife Agnes in nearby Old Hickory. They married in St. Louis, Missouri, on Christmas Eve 1944. After Bob was discharged from service following World War II in 1946, the couple lived in Old Hickory and briefly in North Carolina before moving to Tampa, Florida, in 1952 where they lived for more than 50 years. While in Tampa, Bob worked as a union bricklayer with the International Brotherhood of Masons and Plasterers. Bob retired in 1988 but continued to occasionally work in the trade whenever they needed help from the "Old Master," his self-coined nickname. A long-time member of Lake Carroll Baptist Church in Tampa, Bob was always active in the church as a Sunday school teacher and church volunteer. He was ordained as a deacon in 1965. In 2004, Bob and Agnes moved to Havana, Florida, and in 2008 to Tallahassee. Bob moved to Auburn in 2011, following the death of his wife. Bob enjoyed gardening, ham radio, and working crossword puzzles. Upon moving to Morningside, Bob started and hosted a Friday morning coffee club where all residents were invited to socialize and reminisce. He was a self-taught musician who entertained not only his grandchildren and great-grandchildren with his lively harmonica tunes, but his friends and caregivers at Morningside as well. In the last months of his life, Bob could be heard most Wednesday mornings playing his harmonica at the weekly jam sessions hosted by Spicers Music of Auburn. Bob is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Carol Jakeman of Auburn; son and daughter-in-law Rex and Leslie Jakeman of Colorado Springs, Colorado; daughter and son-in-law Cynthia and Graham Nicol of Tallahassee, Florida; six grandchildren, Katie (Mike) McMullen of Birmingham, Alabama, Melissa (Ted) Mitchell of Gastonia, North Carolina, John (Michelle) Jakeman of Pueblo, Colorado, Savannah Nicol of Tallahassee, Aimee and Benjamin Jakeman, both of Colorado Springs; and six great-grandchildren, Meg, Audrey Grace and Polly Parker Mitchell, Emma and Anna Claire McMullen, and Cathrina Jakeman. He is also survived by a special friend, Christine Correia of Auburn, and several devoted nieces and nephews, including Elaine Smith and Hubert Dorman of Erwin, North Carolina, Tina Von Gonten of Miami, Florida, and Gene Barton of Lake Havasu City, Arizona. Bob is preceded in death by his father (1964), mother (1961), brother, Raymond (1972), and sisters, Helen Burroughs (1991) and Mary Lee Dorman (2004). Services will be held Thursday, September 5, at 2:00 pm in the chapel of Frederick-Dean Funeral Home, Dr. Wayne Flynt officiating. The family will receive friends immediately after the service at the home of Carol and Jeff Jakeman. Memorial donations may be made to the Pilgrims Sunday School Fund, Auburn First Baptist Church.
