Robert Lee McCullough
March 11,1957 – March 16,2023
Robert Lee McCullough Jr., age 66, passed away peacefully at his residence in Destin, Florida on March 16th, 2023.
Robert was born March 11th, 1957 to Robert and Mary Nan McCullough in Opelika, Alabama. After graduating high school from Lee Academy in Auburn, Alabama Robert went on to attend both Auburn University and the University of Florida, where he continued to grow his innate sense of business.
Robert and his late wife Shayne married in 1982. From the time Robert and Shayne met they were inseparable. They were a loving couple who both cared deeply for their family, friends, and community, beginning in the Auburn/Opelika areas and later retiring to Destin, Florida where they spent many wonderful years together with their children.
Robert successfully ran Eagle Budweiser, an Anheuser-Busch distributorship, from a very young age where he grew the product, expanded the region, and developed it into one of the most successful distributorships in the nation. During this time he was elected to serve on the distinguished Anheuser-Busch Advisory Board.
Growing up Robert was a scratch golfer, a talented self-taught musician, an avid hunter, a field trial competitor, and a world-recognized offshore fisherman. In his later years Robert's sportsmanship and love for the water led him to compete in multiple ESPN fishing shows and tournaments all over the world. His passion for fishing was instilled at an early age by his father Bobby and carried on to his wife, children, and friend circle.
Robert's deeply rooted compassion for his family and helping others was derived from his faith and devotion to Christianity. Robert never hesitated to share his love, knowledge and friendship with others. He was a man with a huge heart and always willing to "give you the shirt off of his back", which he did countless times, unconditionally, to so many.
Robert was predeceased by his father Robert (Bobby) McCullough, mother Mary Nan (Mayme) McCullough, and his wife Shayne Thomas McCullough. He is survived by his loving daughter Jordan McCullough-Hecht (Matt Hecht), son Robert Kincaid McCullough, sister Lydia Lee McCullough, and close extended family Rose Anne Hurd, Alan Hurd (Lea Ann Hurd), Kevin Hurd, and David Sheckells, Mickey Thomas (Rachel Thomas), Chuck Thomas (Chloe Thomas), as well as additional extended family who he loved dearly.
The Reverend Tim Thompson will be presiding over the service which will be held in Opelika, Alabama at First United Methodist Church on Thursday March 23rd, 2023 at 11:00am CST. The family requests that in lieu of sending flowers, to please make a donation in Robert's name to the John Hopkins Cancer Research Foundation in gratitude of his late wife's breast cancer survival. Donations may also be made to The Billfish Foundation in honor of Robert's devotion to billfish research and conservation
