Roy Dean Strong
1929-2022
Roy Dean Strong of Opelika, Alabama was born on May 27, 1929 in Notasulga, AL. He died peacefully in his home in Opelika with his family near him on January 29, 2022.
He was preceded in death by his first wife of 45 years, Sue J. Strong; his parents, Lloyd and Dovie Strong; brothers, Ronnie and Jackie Strong; his granddaughters, Stephanie Murphy and Annabella Strong; and great granddaughters, Briley Hobbs and Addison Murphy and his step-daughter, Marsha Walden.
Roy is survived by his current wife of 24 years, Melba Davis Strong; his brother Jimmy and his wife Brenda Sue Strong of Notasulga; his sons, Mike and wife Karen, Johnny and wife Sallie, Joey and wife Sharon, Danny and wife Teresa; step-son, Jake Young and step-daughter Rhonda Edgar. Roy is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 5 step-grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.
Following his 3-year stint in the U.S. Army in 1951, Roy and Sue set up housekeeping outside of Notasulga, AL. Roy worked in the cotton mills in Tallassee and Opelika at night and worked his 10 acres of land to raise cotton during the day. They raised their boys there until 1964 when Roy went to work in Opelika at the Uniroyal Tire Company, and they moved to Opelika. After thirty years there, Roy retired from then B.F. Goodrich. For several more years Roy owned and operated his own Lawn Maintenance business. He also spent several years before complete retirement driving the City of Opelika Mosquito Spray truck. Roy was a friend to all those he met and was a kind and gentle man to everyone. We will miss him.
A public viewing will be held from 5:00 until 7:00 PM Thursday, February 3, 2022 in the Parlor at Frederick-Dean Funeral Home, located at 1801 Frederick Rd in Opelika.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, February 4, 2022 at 2:00 PM. at the Cemetery of Salem-Macon Baptist Church, 4647 Tallapoosa St., Notasulga, AL 36866 with Joey Strong officiating.
