Sam Hawkins, age 85 of LaGrange, Georgia, was born in Langdale, Alabama on April 30, 1926 and passed away October 13, 2011 at his home. After serving in the Army during World War II, he went to work at West Point Pepperell where he was employed for 42 years. On March 29, 1947 he married his lifelong love, Syval Viola Clark. Sam was a founding member of Living Way Ministries where he served as Deacon and Sunday School Superintendent. He was an avid golfer and member of Indian Pines Golf Course. He loved the outdoors. Sam moved to Opelika when he was two years old and lived there for 82 years before moving to Lagrange, Ga. Mr. Hawkins was preceded in death by his parents, Sam J. Hawkins and Bessie Lena Blackmon Hawkins; brothers, Jake (J.C) Hawkins, William (Bud) Hawkins, Charlie Hawkins, Leonard (Boug) Hawkins, and Marvin Paul (Jim) Hawkins; sisters, Mildred Weldon and Maggie H. Troup. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Syval Viola Clark Hawkins; three sons, James E. (Renate) Hawkins, Jimmy F. (Darlene) Hawkins, William Riley Hawkins; two daughters, Barbara Sue (Randall) Akins, Iris L (Angel) Rodriguez; 14 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; 5 great-great grandchildren; special niece, Helen Weldon Thompson; special nephew, William (Buddy) Weldon; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 15, 2011 from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m./cst at Fredericks Funeral Home.
