Samuel Sweatt Bailey
1929-2023
Samuel Sweatt Bailey "Sam" 94, went to his heavenly home on October 7,2023. Sam was born September 24, 1929, to the late Whack and Kathleen Bailey in Hattiesburg, MS but he grew up in Opelika, AL and he graduated from Clift High School in 1947. Sam loved and served the Lord as a lifetime member of Opelika First Methodist Church where he volunteered many hours in retirement doing the Lord's work.
In his early working years, he proudly served in the Army in the Korean War as well as worked as an Opelika Fireman. He then had an impressive career as a federal employee at Fort Benning Military Base. He was also the founder/owner of the first burglar alarm company in Lee County, Bailey Protection Service. Sam was a huge supporter of the men and women in blue and proudly displayed his USA flag in his yard.
In his free time, Sam enjoyed computers, wood working and spending time with his family. He also loved traveling to the mountains each fall and taking cruises with his family.
Sam's greatest roles were being a Christian example, devout husband and loving father. He had a great sense of humor and would always have a smile for everyone.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Beth of 42 years as well as his parents. He is survived by his devoted wife Becky, his children Sam Jr (Debbie), Kathy, Rose Bufford (Hal), Dottie Plagman (Gary) and Glenn (Allene), and his grandchildren Carson Steltonpohl (Jared), Alex Creel (Ben), and Gary Godwin (Patsy). Sam had many, many good friends, but some of his special friends were Bill English, Albert Smith, Terry Adkins, and Larry Magness.
A special thank you to his sweet caregivers and to Compassus Hospice for their love and care.
