Virgil Max King

1949-2023

Virgil Max King, 73, of Auburn, passed away at home on March 6, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. Virgil Max was born in Opp. Alabama, September 24, 1949 to Pauline and Foy King. He grew up in Opp. Max went on to graduate from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa where he majored in business.

Max was visiting Auburn where he met Cathey Starnes, who became his wife of 47 years. Max worked in the building materials business for most of his career. Upon his retirement, he and Cathey moved to Auburn. He had a life-long love of golf, as well as helping others through charitable and mission work.

Max is preceded in death by his parents, Foy and Pauline King. He is survived by his wife, Cathey; his sons Joshua Griggers (Liza) of Ephrata, PA and Jonathan (Erin) of Seattle, WA; grandchildren Katherine Griggers of Lancaster, PA; Julia Griggers of Atlanta, GA; Henry Griggers of Ephrata; and Harrison King of Seattle, WA; brother, Tommy King of LaGrange, GA; sister, Nell McKinnon of Opp, AL.

Services will be held 2:00 pm March 8, 2023, at Auburn United Methodist Church (AUMC) with visitation at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the food pantry at AUMC. Visit www.aumc.net/give and click on Memorials to donate.
