Virginia Boyd Torbert, of Atlanta passed away at home Friday, August 9, after a lengthy illness. Virginia was born in Opelika, Alabama March 11, 1949. She attended high school in Opelika, where she was affectionately known as "Sister", and graduated from Auburn University. After obtaining a Masters in Elementary Education at Auburn, Virginia moved to Atlanta and began teaching first grade. She married her husband of 40 years; Walter Roy Torbert, Jr. Virginia was predeceased by her mother, Helen Rowe Boyd, and father Dr. Frank Harrison Boyd. In addition to raising her family, Virginia was involved in a host of activities at her church, Peachtree Presbyterian, where she was an active member of her Sunday school class, Womens Circle, and Presbyterian Women (moderator and lifetime member). She was an avid gardener and delighted in nurturing both the family pets and songbirds in her backyard. She was also a long-time member of the Atlanta singing group Peach Pipes. Some of Virginias favorite times were spent at their homes on Santa Rosa Beach and Lake Burton, where extended family often gathered. Virginia is survived by her husband Roy Torbert, sons Walter Roy Torbert III (Laura), Benjamin Boyd Torbert, and daughter Mary Torbert Atkinson (John Martin). Grandchildren include Walter Roy Torbert IV, John Hanson Torbert, Jane Helen Atkinson, and Virginia Brown Atkinson. Other surviving family members are Frank Harrison Boyd, Jr. of Olympia Washington, Charles Benjamin Boyd (Helen) and William Ernest Boyd (Sharon) both of Atlanta, along with many loving nieces and nephews. A memorial service commemorating Virginias life will be held on Monday, August 12th at 2 p.m. EST at Peachtree Presbyterian Church followed by reception and visitation in the church Welcome Center. Interment will be at Rosemere Cemetery in Opelika, Alabama on Tuesday, August 13th at 11 a.m. CST, 12 p.m. EST. The family requests memorials honoring Virginia to be made to The Ovarian Cancer National Alliance (901 E Street NW, Suite 405, Washington, DC 20004, www.ovariancancer.org). Interment will be Tuesday August 13, 2013 at 11 AM CST at Rosemere Cemetery in Opelika, Alabama.
