Obituary

Willis Marion Goolsby, of Auburn, was born on August 2, 1938 in Damascus, Alabama and passed away peacefully at his home on October 29, 2013 after battling Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. He was 75 years old. Willis came to Auburn to attend Alabama Polytechnic Institute in August 1956. He earned Bachelors degrees in Engineering, and Education. In 1960, while attending college, he married Doris Jean White. Together they helped manage Goolsbys Boarding House owned by Williss brother. Willis taught math and related subjects at high schools in Columbus, Georgia and in the two-year college system in Montgomery, Alabama. He served as Dean of Students for many years before retiring from a very successful 33 year career in Education in June of 1995. After retiring, Willis became a Lee County Master Gardner and enjoyed doing volunteer work with this group. In addition to gardening, he was very skilled at woodworking and mechanics. He attended Auburn Church of Christ and enjoyed helping the congregation with several woodworking projects. He loved to build furniture and restoring old tractors and lawnmowers to like-new condition. His last project before the IPF progressed was the restoration of a 1962 red Volkswagen, the first new car he and his wife owned. Willis was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was very proud of his three grandsons and loved to show others pictures of them. Mr. Goolsby was preceded in death by his daughter, Patricia Jane Goolsby, his parents, grandparents, five brothers, and one sister. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Doris Jean White Goolsby; daughters, Marian Pappanastos (Jim), Willisia Vail (Matthew); grandsons, Lucas Alan, Justin Willis, and Joshua Kaeden Vail, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
