1936-2023
Woodrow Lawrence "Larry" Powell was born June 6, 1936 in Pensacola Florida and died on May 20, 2023.
Mr. Powell was a proud Marine Corp and US Army veteran. He entered the service in 1955, enlisting in the USMC. He was discharged in 1959, where upon he enlisted in the US Army. Mr. Powell retired from the Army in 1975 with over 20 years combined active duty service.
During that time in the military, Mr. Powell had the opportunity to travel extensively both in the U.S. and abroad, as well as to serve his country in Vietnam. After retirement from military service, Mr. Powell pursued his secondary education at Chattahoochee Valley Community College, Columbus College, and Jacksonville State University. He then held a position teaching special needs children in Clay Co, Alabama. He later served as a police officer at the Pensacola Naval Air Station for several years before retiring permanently.
His favorite activities were anything outdoors. Mr. Powell loved to hunt, fish, and go camping. He enjoyed sports, and spent many years officiating many different types of sporting events. He was active in the Marine Corps League in Pensacola, participating in many events benefitting handicapped children.
Mr. Powell is preceded in death by his loving wife of 62 years, Geraldine Powell, his son Stephen Powell, his mother Helen Dungan, stepfather J.W. Dungan, father Woodrow W. Powell, brother Carl Powell.
He is survived by his loving daughter Sharon (Damian) Downing, granddaughter Cynthia (Nicholas) Vilardi, great-grandchildren Anthony (Jamisenne) Vilardi, Alayna Vilardi, Adrian Vilardi and Ava Vilardi, sister Joy Sheffield along with many other family and friends.
A service will be held at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell, AL on Tuesday June 6, at 12:30PM CST.
