Joseph L. Dean, III Owner | Licensed Funeral Director, Embalmer, & Cremationist

Born in Columbus, Georgia and reared in East Alabama, Joseph is the owner of the funeral home and is a licensed Funeral Director, Embalmer, and Cremationist.

Joseph attended Lee-Scott Academy, Southern Union, Auburn University, and Jefferson State Mortuary School. Joseph is Married to Kimberly Dean, An attorney in Opelika, Alabama, they have three sons ranging in age from 20 months to 9 years. Joseph believes it is necessary to treat every family with kindness, compassion, sincerity, and respect in order to walk with them step by step in this most difficult time.

Russell McLachlan Apprentice Funeral Director

Russell McLachlan, an apprentice funeral director, is a native of Milton, Florida and first came to the area in 1983 as a student at Auburn University. He worked part-time at the local funeral home.

Upon graduation in 1987, he was commissioned in the US Navy and left the area. After 30 years of service, Russell retired from the Navy but still teaches securities studies in an online Master’s program through Air University.

Russell returned to the funeral service out of his passion to assist and comfort families in their time of grief. He is married to his wife of 34 years, the former Kay Whitaker also of Milton, Florida. They have three sons and reside in Auburn, Alabama.

Meagan Wade Hilyer Apprentice Funeral Director | Office Manager

Meagan Wade Hilyer, 26, has a Bachelor’s degree in Art & Design from LaGrange College of LaGrange, Georgia. Meagan feels greatly fortunate to be given the privilege of serving each family that chooses to trust Frederick-Dean Funeral Home & Crematory with the care of their loved one and is indebted to each family for their gifts of love and wisdom. Meagan resides in Auburn, Alabama with her husband of 2 years, Trenton Hilyer, a Mechanical Engineering graduate student at Auburn University, and their former stray cat, Maya Lin.

Rhett Barnes Office Manager | Apprentice Funeral Director

Rhett Barnes, currently 32 years old and have been in the Funeral industry for 5 years as Office Manager. Born and reared in Opp, Alabama and from there went on to Central Alabama Community College in Alexander City for two years on a baseball scholarship. I finished up my college degree at The University of Alabama and now live in Auburn, Alabama. Growing up in a small town my parents instilled in me a passion for community, and helping people in time of need. This line of work has given me that opportunity and it is something that I truly enjoy. My wife Abby is a Nurse Practitioner at Stop Watch Urgent Care and together we have two Springer Spaniels.

Billy L. New Funeral Assistant

Billy L. New grew up in Wedowee, Alabama before moving to Lee County in 1969. He worked in the medical field for over 40 years prior to retiring and currently helps several days a week at Frederick-Dean Funeral Home. Bill is a proud Army Veteran, and he and his wife Lura have four sons and five grandchildren.

Thad Endicott Funeral Assistant

Thad Endicott, Pastor of Heritage Baptist Church in Opelika, moved to the Auburn-Opelika area in 2012. He loves ministering to people and began working at Frederick-Dean Funeral Home in 2014 as an On-staff Minister. He has a lovely wife of 23 years and 5 wonderful children. He was born and raised in Kansas, and upon graduating from Bible College in Oklahoma, he served as an associate pastor in Birmingham for over 14 years before coming to Opelika. He enjoys the opportunity to share the gospel and assist families in their time of need.

Garron Endicott Funeral Assistant

Garron Endicott, 21, has served part time at Frederick-Dean Funeral Home since 2015. He has an Associate’s degree from Veritas Baptist College and plans to graduate with his Bachelor’s in May 2021. When Garron is not working at the funeral home, he is probably serving in his church, running his landscaping business, or playing piano, guitar, or trumpet. Garron enjoys meeting and ministering to people in their time of need. His motto for life is, “Live everyday like it is your last, and love every person like it is their last.”

Heather Burt Funeral Assistant

Heather Burt, born in Muscat, Oman and raised around the world in the Air Force, has a love for people and music being a photographer and playing both trumpet and French horn.

Through her photography, she has created lifelong memories for families by photographing weddings, funerals and much more. Being a freelance photographer, Heather also enjoys being able to photograph all of God’s creation by traveling to many destinations to see sunrises, nature and more.

She has been awarded various metals for her musical accomplishments throughout her years in school. She was given the honor to perform four musical compositions written and composed by Percy Grainger at Chicago Symphony Hall in 2011 and chosen to perform music composed by Robert W. Smith in 2014. Throughout her musical career, she has attended clinics under the directions of Adam Rapa, Dr. Adam Booker, Delfeayo Marsalis and many others.

She has an Associate’s Degree in Mechanical Design Engineering from Gadsden State Community College and is currently attending Auburn University perusing her Bachelor’s Degree in Art and Photography.  Her main goal in the Funeral Industry is to help families by offering care, compassion and understanding when they need it most. By achieving this goal, she is perusing to be an Apprentice Funeral Director.

Shirley Griggs Dismukes

Shirley Griggs Dismukes was reared in Dothan, Alabama and moved to Beauregard in 1968 where her husband Robert Dismukes Pastored Providence Baptist Church. After his death She worked as the Director of Providence Child Development Center. Shirley has been a devoted part of Frederick-Dean Funeral Home since she started in February of 1987. She has a son named David Dismukes who resides in Beauregard, and daughter Susan who lives in Indiana.

Heather Burt
